How to Change the Chemical Composition of Soil

Knowing how to correctly change the chemical composition of your soil can be an important step in increasing the fertility of your soil. What you add to the soil is what changes its chemical composition. It is important to consider that achieving long lasting change may be more complicated than just adding some fertilizer, since these chemicals can leach and drain out of the soil over time. For a long lasting change to the soil chemistry, add organic matter such as manure. Organic matter releases chemical nutrients into the soil slowly as well as holding them for plant use.

Instructions

    • 1

Till the surface of the soil 6 to 12 inches deep to increase the surface area of the soil and allow more soil to come in contact with the manure.

    • 2

Spread a thick layer of well-decayed manure over the surface of the soil. Manure is rich in elements that will change the chemical composition of your soil. The added organic matter will also create a habitat of organisms that will fix atmospheric nitrogen in the soil further modifying its chemistry.

Mix in the manure by tilling the surface of the soil again.
