Plants That Grow Well Around Rose Bushes

Roses may be thought of as difficult garden hosts to other plants, but there are a few that go well in the rose bed. Companion planting for roses can include many varieties so long as you remember two basic rules. Tea roses need to be mature to have companions and shrub roses need to maintain air circulation. Plants that grow well around rose bushes must leave air circulation and not root crowd.
  1. Italian Bellflower

    • Campanula isophylla, also known as Italian bellflower or the star of Bethlehem, is a perennial. Flowers are 1 inch wide and bell shaped. They can be white or blue with stems a few inches long. It needs medium humidity and bright indirect light. Keep it in moist soil with weekly water soluble fertilizer feedings. Propagate via spring seed.

    Common Sage

    • Salvia officinalis Berggarten, also known as common sage, is a shrub herb. It can get 1 to 2 feet tall with spade-shaped 2-inch long leaves. Bluish purple spikes of color are its fragrant blooms. It needs medium humidity and full sun with moist soil. Propagate via spring seed. This common sage is a nice choice for color, fragrance and its use in the kitchen.

    Astilbe Fanal

    • Astilbe arendsii, also known as astilbe fanal, is a perennial. It has deep red flowers and 1-foot long spires of feathery red. Deep green or bronze green foliage is wonderful in the winter and has a woody look. Astilbe fanal is a good shade plant and needs light to medium shade with deep moist well-drained acidic soils. Propagate via division or seed.

    Canterbury Bells

    • Campanula medium, also known as Canterbury bells, is an annual. It has bell-shaped white, blue, rose, pink or lavender flowers 2 inches long or more. Plant a Canterbury bell in moist rich soil in direct to partial sun. Propagate via spring or summer seed. It has an average growth rate.

    Clematis

    • Clematis virginiana, also known as simply clematis, is a climber that can be shrubby or perennial, deciduous or evergreen. Depending on cultivar, flowers and foliage will vary in size and color, but most will be white. Plant clematis in full sun to partial shade in well drained soils (adaptable to the type).
