How to Stop Black Spot on Roses From Spreading

Black Spot is a common fungal disease that many roses are prone to. Black Spot occurs in humid conditions. When a rose bush is infected with black spot the leaves will turn a yellowish color with very distinctive black spots. Black spot is highly contagious among rose bushes. The best treatment method for black spot is prevention. Purchasing new roses that are disease resistant is a very wise choice.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all Black Spot diseased leaves from the rose bush.

    • 2

Place the leaves into a bag or garbage can. Do not allow the Black Spot infected leaves to drop on the ground and stay there. The disease ridden leaves have active fungal spores that will infect your other roses.

    • 3

Cut back canes of highly infected rose bushes. Do not leave the canes on the ground or allow them to come in contact with other roses.

    • 4

Dispose of the Black Spot infected leaves and canes. Tie off the garbage bags tightly and throw the bag away or burn the leaves and canes. Do not add them to your compost pile or leave them sitting somewhere in your yard. The spores will continue to develop and infect your rose bushes.

    • 5

Water roses early in the morning at the base of the bush. Do not spray the entire bush because the splashing water can carry the Black Spot to your other roses. Do not water roses at night because the foliage will stay damp and create an environment for Black Spot to thrive.

    • 6

Plant roses in areas where they will get an ample amount of sunlight.

    • 7
