The Best Fragrant Climbing Roses for a Pergola

One of the best ways of transforming an ordinary garden pergola into a stunning floral display is to have roses climbing up it. The effect is even better when they are naturally abundant in fragrance and scent the air in your garden. There is a huge variety of roses available, from traditional English roses to new hybrids, and in a spectacular rainbow of colors. Choose one variety or a mix of several to create a unique display.
  1. Teasing Georgia

    • Create an elegant display of medium-fragranced roses by planting Teasing Georgia underneath your garden pergola. This rose produces characteristic yellow blooms that have an intricately formed rosette in the middle, with the outer petals surrounding it. It has a traditional tea rose--style fragrance and can grow to heights of 6 feet to 8 feet tall.

    Clarence House

    • Opt for the Clarence House double-bloomed citrus-scented rose as a modern climber for your pergola. Produced to mark Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's centenary birthday, this special rose has a delicate pale yellow shade and produces magnificent medium-sized blooms. The rose benefits from having limited thorns and so is perfect for use on a pergola that may have a seat underneath.

    New Dawn

    • Adorn your pergola with the creamy pink shade and fruity scent of the classic climber rose, New Dawn. First grown in the 1930s, this rose is renowned for its constant flowering ability, so it should keep a pergola awash with flowers throughout the summer. The rambling rose can grow to heights of 20 feet to 30 feet, making it perfect for large pergolas, and is relatively resistant to disease.

    Tess Of The D'Urbervilles

    • Transform your pergola into a crimson-colored floral display by planting Tess of the D'Urbervilles roses. Named after the Thomas Hardy novel, this rose lives up to the name by being a hardy climbing rose. The full double blooms have a medium old rose--style fragrance, and the plants can grow up to 7 feet tall.

    Crown Princess Margareta

    • Add a dash of delicate apricot color to your pergola by planting Crown Princess Margareta at the base. This pretty rose flowers with enormous blooms and has a very strong, heady and fruity fragrance. It can grow up to 8 feet, so is ideally suited to growing up and over a garden pergola.
