Are Black Roses Natural?

Roses come in almost every color of the rainbow. Some of these types of roses occur in nature, while others are manipulated to show a desired color or attribute. Black roses do not occur in nature.
  1. Types

    • There is no naturally occurring true black rose. There is a variety of rose called the Bacarra rose, which is an extremely dark red rose that can be mistaken for being black in color. These roses are sometimes called "black magic" roses.

    Painted Roses

    • Live roses that appear to be black may have been painted. This is done using a special spray-on color, but this coloring can stain fabrics that come into contact with the rose.

    Tinting

    • Because of how they utilize water, flowers can be dyed nearly any color. Fresh-cut flower stems can be placed in water with food coloring, and within a few hours the flower will draw the tinted water up through its stem and into its petals. This process can create black roses that won't stain fabrics.
