How to Care for Apple Snails

A freshwater mollusk, the apple snail serves as an effective tank cleaner and pet for a community aquarium. There are many species of the apple snail, but that most commonly found in aquariums is the Florida apple snail. Although considered an invasive species in the wild, apple snails are low-maintenance additions to your home aquarium setup that co-exist peacefully and safely with a wide range of aquatic life.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your apple snails in an aquarium that has a warm water temperature of between 70 to 80 degrees F. Too cold water can kill the snails.

    • 2

Place a varied array of live aquatic plants in the aquarium. Apple snails enjoy live plants and will grow quite large as they appear to eat every plant in site. Keeping plants like aquatic grasses not only gives them vegetative food, but the plants also collect algae which apple snails enjoy as well. They also eat sinking and floating fish food as well as vegetables such as peas, spinach and broccoli floret pieces.

    • 3

Choose safe tank mates for your apple snails. They get along well with most fish and aquatic life but loach fish, cichlids and crustaceans such as crayfish will attack and kill them.

Change the water in your aquarium monthly to keep the water safe and comfortable for your fish and snails. With apple snails being such big eaters they produce a lot of waste, which creates a toxic environment for your aquatic life. A 20 to 50 percent water change keeps your tank clean.
