Easy to Grow Climbing Roses

Climbing roses as a group are very vigorous roses. The most common problem with climbing rose is their cold intolerance so those that live in areas of heavy frost in the winter should look for a cold-hardy rose.
  1. Climbers for Ground Cover

    • Creeping roses are in the climber category but are better suited for ground cover than for climbing on trellises since their shoots are shorter than most climbers. Rosa wichuraiana, or memorial rose, is an extremely hardy climbing rose and has been used in the breeding of many newer climbers and ramblers.

    Everblooming Climbers

    • Ever-blooming climbers bloom more than once per season and are very hardy and aggressive growing roses. Included in this variety are America (an orange rose), blaze (a red or yellow rose), Don Juan (a red rose), golden showers (a yellow rose) and new dawn (a pink rose.)

    Rambler Climbers

    • Ramblers are very aggressive growing and hardy roses. Some of these can grow 20 feet in one season. Included in this group are Dorothy Perkins (a pink rose), excelsia (a red rose), Chevy Chase (a dark red rose), May queen (a light pink rose) and etain (an orange-pink rose.)
