How to Prune Roses in the First Year

Pruning roses is an important part of maintaining a healthy rose garden. The process of pruning can bring old, neglected rosebushes back to life. But the best way to garden is to start pruning your rosebushes at the end of the first growing season or in the spring before they start their second growing season. This way, they'll stay healthy from the start.

Remove any dead or damaged branches from your rosebushes by snipping them 1/4 inch above an outward facing bud. Prune floribunda and tea roses in the spring, prior to budding. Old-fashioned roses require pruning directly after the end of the flowering season.

    • 2

Cut all healthy canes to one-half their length. Snip each cane 1/4 inch above a growing bud. After the next growing season, these canes will be cut to the crown of the bush to make room for new growth.

    • 3

Remove all of the leaves and dead flowers from the trimmed bush. Clean any leaves or other debris from the bed around the bushes.
