How to Grow Large Roses

To grow large roses you must supply your rose plant with an adequate amount of nutrients, sunlight and water. Rose care essentials include a nitrogen-rich fertilizer and organic mulch. Don't forget your springtime pruning, which promotes optimum plant growth. Roses are tough, but they still need and deserve tender loving care.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location that offers your rose plant four to six hours of direct sunlight.

    • 2

Dig a hole at least 12 inches deep and 18 inches in diameter.

    • 3

Fill the hole with rose soil. A variety made up of compost, aged pine bark, iron-rich red sand, rice hulls, composted top soil and orange sand works best. Break up the rose soil with your hands before you use it.

    • 4

Cover the rose bed with 2 to 4 inches of organic mulch. Mulch is used to lock in moisture and prevent your rose plant from drying out during the spring and winter months.

    • 5

Water your rose plant regularly if the rainfall level in your area is low or inconsistent. Provide your plant with 4 to 5 gallons of water per week.

    • 6

Add fertilizer containing both time-release and soluble nitrogen. Apply it as directed when your plant starts to leaf out. Nitrogen stimulates growth and provides your roses with three to four months of nutrients. Stop fertilizing two months before the winter season begins.

    • 7

Prune your rose plant in the spring. Cut away dead or damaged branches first. When making an incision, cut at a 45-degree angle to encourage upward growth from the base. Only cut about 6 to 12 inches in total from the plant.
