When to Cut Back Roses

Pruning rose bushes can seem like a daunting task to the novice rose gardener. While it's tempting to simply leave your roses alone each year for fear of pruning incorrectly, it's important to remember how important pruning is for their health. Knowing when to cut back your roses is just as important as knowing how to prune them.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the roses off your plant as they bloom throughout the growing season. Not only will you have a nice bouquet for your kitchen, you'll also constantly give your rose bushes a light pruning.

    • 2

Continue to cut the roses off your plant as the season goes on, but cut the stems longer—as far down as the previous stem if you'd like—as the season comes to a close.

    • 3

Remove longer canes throughout the growing season if they are getting in the way of walkways or are too heavy for the plant to support.

    • 4

Cut back repeat blooming roses in the early spring. You'll know that it's time to give them a heavy pruning when they buds are beginning to swell.

    • 5

Cut back old fashioned roses and climbers immediately after they've finished flowering. Avoid pruning these types of roses heavily in the spring since they will produce flowers on last year's growth.
