Measure the landscaping area and mark it off using landscaping spray paint.
Remove any ground cover in the landscaping area. Take away any debris in the area and then rototill the soil to turn the ground to destroy the root system of any plants growing in the area.
Place a layer of landscape fabric on the ground to cover the landscaping area. Measure and cut the fabric to fit the landscaping area. Anchor the fabric to the ground using anchoring pins. The fabric will serve as a barrier to stop weeds from growing in the landscaping as well as to prevent soil erosion from rainwater.
Edge the landscape area with a flexible rubber garden border to keep the gravel or stones from moving from the area.
Place the gravel into the landscaping area until the landscaping fabric has been covered. Use a variety of gravel types to create patterns in the landscape or achieve the look you're working toward.
Use large fieldstones in conjunction with the gravel, placing them on top of the gravel bed to prevent them from sliding.
Fertilize plants placed on the border of your gravel with liquid fertilizer to promote lush growth. The rubber barrier will prevent the full expansion of these border plant root systems.
