How to Set Flagstone With Gravel in Between

Laying a flagstone pathway is an outdoor do-it-yourself project that can bring a long-lasting decorative effect to your yard. Due to its irregular shape, flagstone is the perfect material for a rustic walkway. The irregular-shaped flagstone can be surrounded by gravel, which is also a little easier to lay out than more symmetrical stones that have to be cemented together.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the area you are going to make your flagstone pathway in. This includes removing weeds, grass or roots. If necessary, you may have to use a shovel to dig up any roots that are in the way.

    • 2

Spread sand over the area where you intend to lay your flagstone walkway. Smooth it out carefully with your steel rake. Ideally you should have about a two-inch sand base to lay the flagstone down upon.

    • 3

Wet the sand lightly with a garden hose and smooth it out again with the steel rake.

    • 4

Lay out your flagstones. Since flagstone comes in irregular shaped pieces, they do not have to be laid in a perfectly symmetrical pattern. You should leave at least a few inches between each flagstone, though, so that the gravel will settle in the cracks between the stones.

    • 5

Pour gravel between the flagstone pieces you have laid for steps. Small, thin gravel is usually used between flagstones and should be available at home-improvement store garden sections.

    • 6

Sweep excess gravel off the flagstones into the cracks between the stones.
