How to Carve Stone Using a Dremel

You can carve a message or identifying label into a stone for a natural and charming addition to the garden or landscape. A Dremel rotary tool with a grinding stone bit will make the job uncomplicated. Carve up a bunch of stones with short words like “Oak” or “Sue” to give as holiday gifts to tree-loving friends. Once the process has been mastered, longer messages or labels can be attempted.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a short message or label with large letters on a stone with a pencil.

    • 2

Insert the grinding stone bit by holding down the Dremel tool shaft-lock button and loosening the collet nut, which is surrounding the bit area, with the wrench tool that comes with the Dremel. Pull out another bit, if there is one, insert the grinding bit and re-tighten the collet nut.

    • 3

Put on the safety glasses. Start the Dremel tool motor and hold the tool as if you were holding a pencil. Lightly trace over the pencil marks to create a groove.

    • 4

Trace over the pencil marks at least three times to create a groove of the desired depth.
