How to Remove Algae From Cement Fountains

Garden and other outdoor fountains are prone to algae growth due to the constant moisture and sunlight in the environment. This algae, when allowed to grow out of control, becomes thick, slimy and sometimes stains the cement of your fountain. Knowing how to clean this algae from your cement fountain gives you the ability to keep your outdoor garden accents looking nice. Preventative cleaning also keeps algae from coming back.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a 20 oz. plastic spray bottle half with bleach and half with water. Shake it vigorously to mix the solution.

    • 2

Drain the water from your cement fountain. If it is an electric fountain, unplug it.

    • 3

Spray the bleach-water solution liberally over every area with algae growing on the cement. Let it sit for about 15 minutes for the algae to react to the bleach. Much of the algae will break away from the concrete on its own.

    • 4

Scrub at the stuck-on algae on the cemented fountain texture with a stiff-bristled scrub brush. Use circular motions to work with the friction caused by the movement to help remove the algae stuck to the fountain. Spray more bleach-water in the area for help.

Rinse out the fountain with a high-pressured garden hose. Rinse it several times until the water that runs from the fountain is clear instead of tinted green with algae. Turn the fountain upside-down so it can dry.
