How to Install a Trash Pump

A trash pump provides a method to get rid of wastes that flow through a sink. Instead of allowing garbage to accumulate in a trash bin or another container, you can direct wastes into a trash pump. While you could hire a specialist to install the trash pump, learning how to install the appliance will help familiarize yourself with the pump's use and placement.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the area underneath the sink where the pump will be installed.

    • 2

Remove the sink's waste assembly by unscrewing it with a screwdriver. The waste assembly usually is composed of the drain pipe that is connected to the main waste disposal system of the sink. Some sinks might have a cover for the area where you can fit the trash pump. Remove the cover and use a scraper to remove the sealant found under the sink.

    • 3

Secure the trash pump in the designated area under the cover with plumber's putty and mounting bolts. Apply the putty onto the sink to help the flange adhere to it, and tighten the bolts to secure the garbage disposal system.

    • 4

Wire the trash pump according to the manufacturer's instructions. Connect the trash pump to your waste water line using PVC pipe so that the waste is eliminated as soon as it goes into the pump.

    • 5

Test the trash pump by turning it on and checking the garbage disposal system for leaks. Check that all parts of the sink are working correctly before turning off the system.
