Uses for Agate Slabs

Agate stones are a mineral made of quartz and are very durable. Once made into a slab, agate stones can be molded into different shapes for different uses. The color of the stones is determined by the region it comes from and can vary greatly. The color and pattern can also affect the value of the agate.

    • Agate's colors and hardness make it a favorite for some lapidary artists. Cabochons cut from agate make rings, pendants and bracelets. While such patterns as ovals an circles are popular for making items, free form cabochons are increasing in popularity.

    Decorations

    • The more colorful stones can be used as decorations. If the slab is cut correctly, it can be displayed on a picture stand and light can come through the colors. Colorful coasters and hot plates can be made from slabs. The stone will also provide protection from heat.

    • Agate slabs shaped like tiles can be used on kitchen or bathroom walls and also as floor tiles. Large slabs can be utilized as a kitchen counter top. Walkways and patios can be made from agate slabs to add color and variety to the look of your home.

    • For people who practice metaphysics, agate is known as as a stone of power and protection. Because agate comes is such a variety of colors, they are used differently. Some believe agate stones can bring emotional stability and calm to those who wear them.
