How to Move Large Rocks by Leverage

Large rocks can unearth themselves in your garden or lawn over a period of time. These cumbersome rocks can be very unsightly, and can also be a nuisance when mowing the lawn or planting a garden. Large rocks can be moved without the aid of heavy machinery using a simple physics method called leverage. Leverage is when multiplied force is applied to an object. Using a few simple tools, you can easily leverage a large rock out of the ground.

Things You'll Need

  • Shovel or spade
  • 4-foot pry bar

Instructions

    • 1

Expose the rock by digging out the area around it. Use a shovel or spade to clean out as much dirt as possible.

    • 2

Insert the flat end of the pry bar under the edge of the rock. Wedge the bar in as far as possible underneath the stone.

    • 3

Place a block of wood under the pry bar handle. Situate the block near the lower third of the handle nearest to the rock. The closer you place the wood to the rock, the more leverage you will get.

    • 4

Press down on the pry bar handle to lift the edge of the rock up. Place a block of wood under the edge of the rock to keep it elevated.

    • 5

Repeat the process until the rock is completely unearthed. Use the pry bar all around the rock to free all sides. The rock is ready to be moved.

    • 6

Slide a plastic snow sled under the rock if you need to drag it elsewhere. Coat the bottom of the sled with floor wax to allow it to slide easily along the ground.
