Mow the yard as close to the ground as possible. Put your lawn mower on its lowest setting and go over the entire area until it is uniformly clipped.
Cover the entire surface of the yard with landscaping fabric. This will help kill off the grass underneath the fabric and prevent the growth of new weeds or grass. Hold down the landscaping fabric with bricks to prevent it from moving or shifting. Place the bricks every 5 to 7 feet.
Layer mulch over the landscaping fabric. Use a mulch in the color of your choice and place a thick layer over the fabric. Make sure it is as even as possible. Wait one to two weeks before proceeding.
Remove the bricks. Pour gravel on top of the mulch and landscaping fabric. Use a rake to evenly spread the gravel over the mulch, covering the entire area. Allow this three to four weeks to settle. After the gravel settles, you may notice some areas that are bare or not even. Fill these in with more gravel and rake it to make it even.
