Yard Rock Removal

Rocks are a popular landscaping feature that can add ruggedness and dimension to any plain backyard. However, if they are naturally occurring or were installed by the previous property owner, they may not be in your desired location. If relocation is your aim, you can move rocks of most sizes using simple household tools. If you wish to completely remove the rocks from your backyard, you'll need an appropriate vehicle and a place to deposit the load.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Relocating or Removing Small Rocks

    • 1

Move the wheelbarrow so that is within 2 feet of the pile of small rocks or pebbles you wish to move.

    • 2

Slide the head of the shovel into the pile of rocks to pick up a load. Deposit it into the wheelbarrow.

    • 3

Continue shoveling the rocks into the wheelbarrow until it is roughly halfway full. If the load is too heavy to move comfortably, remove some of the rocks.

    • 4

Grasp both handles of the wheelbarrow and raise it off the ground. Wheel the rocks to their new location and unload them using your shovel. If you will be removing the rocks from your property, wheel them out to your vehicle.

    • 5

Drop the tailgate of the pickup truck or hauling trailer. Lay the loading ramp on top of the tailgate and lock it into place using the securing hinges at its top.

    • 6

Wheel your rocks up the ramp and tip them out into the truck or trailer bed.

    • 7

Repeat steps 3 through 6 until you have removed or relocated all of your rocks.

    Moving or Removing Larger Rocks

    • 8

Place a snow sled at the base of the rock. Use this method only if your sled has an outer rim several inches high. Crouch down to the rock and tip it so that it rolls onto the center of the sled.

    • 9

Grasp the rope handle at the front of the sled and drag the rock to its new location or out to your vehicle.

    • 10

Walk up the vehicle ramp, pulling the sled and rock behind you. Move cautiously so that the rock does not tip over the rim of the sled and roll down the ramp.

    • 11

Tip the rock out of the sled and into the truck or trailer bed.

    • 12

Relocate a very large rock using the pry-bar method. Place a brick at the rock's base and wedge a 4-foot pry bar beneath the rock and against the inside edge of the brick. Push downward on the pry bar to roll the rock forward. Replace the brick and repeat this step until the rock is in your desired location.
