How to Make a Rock Lawn

Rock lawns are low-maintenance options for people who don't like caring for grass. They work particularly well in hot climates because they help preserve the water under the soil. A heavy mulch is used under the rocks to keep weeds or grass from pushing through. Rock lawns can still have some plants if desired. This type of garden is often seen in Japanese monasteries and in Italian gardens. Use pea gravel or small, colored rocks to create different looks.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any debris on the lawn such as large sticks, rocks, litter and lawn decorations.

    • 2

Spread black and white newspaper across the lawn in a layer that is about 1 inch thick.

    • 3

Roll heavy, black plastic across the lay from edge to edge, overlapping it where necessary.

    • 4

Cut slits through the plastic and newspaper to add any plants. Dig a hole where the slit is and set the plant in it. You can also add plants at a later time by moving the rocks aside to reach the mulch.

    • 5

Pour your desired rocks in the center of the lawn and use a metal rake to spread them evenly across the surface. Be careful not to disturb any plants.

    • 6

Add any larger rocks or other decorative objects for focal points.
