How to Build an Outside Zen Garden

A Zen garden is a space decorated with sand, rocks and other natural materials in lines or patterns to create a meditative environment, according to the dictionary. Of course, the actual interpretation is always unique, and each garden is very different in size, materials and layout. Design your own Zen garden to fit an outside tabletop or take over a yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Define the space where you want to build your Zen garden. You might choose one small space in front of a seat or maybe a larger garden with a place to walk. An easy way to build larger Zen gardens is to break them into smaller sections where you can create individual gardens. Use a garden hose or stakes with string to mark off the exterior.

    • 2

Choose your plants and materials. Traditional Zen gardens include rocks, plants and water, but you can include glass or metal and even wood. Any type of natural element adds to the ambience of the garden. Keep in mind that your garden should not require a lot of maintenance; it is supposed to be a place of meditation.

    • 3

Remove the existing plants and materials from the site. Spray an herbicide if you don't want grass or plants, and cover the area with a landscaping mat to keep weeds from coming up.

    • 4

Move in your largest objects, or set up any water fountains or pools. Once you finish the big work, add any plants that you are including in the design. Water the plants deeply so they get a good start.

    • 5

Add your stone elements, starting from the largest to the smallest or sand. Keep the stones in order as much as possible, creating geometric designs for visual interest. Even sand keeps the Zen quality if you drag lines or swirls through it.
