Clean the knife you will be using to cut scions with rubbing alcohol. This will help to prevent the spread of any diseases when grafting.
Cut some scions from the color of rose bush you want to combine with another. This is called gathering budwood. Cut a section from the stem that contains three buds. Cut the piece at the top of the lower bud and count up two buds where you should make another cut right on top of the third bud.
Use your knife to cut a pointed “V” at the bottom of the scion.
Select one of the woody stems of the rose plant you will be using as the root stock. This should be one of the two-year-old stem portions of the plant. Using new growth will not work. Cut off the top of the stem and make a 1-inch deep slice in the middle of the stem.
Insert the scion into the slice you made in the rootstock stem. Wrap the graft tightly with grafting tape. It should take four to six weeks for the graft to take hold. Repeat these steps to add more scions to the rootstock plant. The new colored roses will only grow from the grafted scions.
