Select an area that receives six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day. Although you can grow flowers in a shady or partially shady area, your choices will be more limited. Most flowers prefer a sunny location.

    • 2

Mark the area for the bed with a chalk line or spray paint. Many prefer a round or oval design, but any shape that appeals to you is fine. Line the area with black plastic or landscape fabric to create a barrier for weeds. Dig or purchase topsoil and create a mound of soil within the outline.

    • 3

Gather natural stones to use for a border. Look for rocks or stones in wooded areas of your property. Friends or neighbors may allow you to collect rocks from their property. Always seek permission from the property owner before gathering rocks.

    • 4

Border the raised flowerbed with rocks. Push the rocks into the edge of the soil to create the appearance of natural stones. Fill in crevices with soil.

    • 5

Plant seeds or purchase seedlings at your local nursery and plant them in the soil of your raised bed. Water thoroughly. Keep soil evenly moist until seedlings are established. Water whenever the soil dries out.
