In 1901, Edward Drummond, a glassmaker who lived in the area, founded the Akron Art Museum. It has 35 galleries, a glass pavilion and a sculpture garden outdoors in the museum's front passageway on Monroe Street. The Georgia and David K. Welles Sculpture Garden opened in 2001 and consists of landscaped gardens with over 20 sculptures from different eras, several of which are stone. The Welles donated eight sculptures and participated in fundraising for the museum. Admission to the museum and its sculpture garden is always free. The museum is closed on Mondays.

In 1932, during the Depression, a Springfield, Ohio, man named H.G. Hartman created a collection of stone garden sculptures on his property. He worked on the collection for seven years, until shortly before his death in 1944. Stone replicas of the Holy Family and the White House mingle with miniature stone castles and other stone buildings. Hartman handmade the garden with scavenged stone pieces he gathered near his home. Today, Hartman's grandchildren own the home (although it is available for sale), volunteers and donations help with the maintenance and the rock garden is open to the public.

Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is an historic house and 70-acre country estate with various stone garden sculptures. The site's name actually means "stone quarry" in Old English. The Japanese garden designed in 1916 has undergone restorations in 1974 and 2010. The space has tranquil stone buildings and archways that mingle with waterfalls and foliage. The dell garden has a stone underpass and rock ledges that create a natural amphitheater in the meadow, surrounded by wildflowers. The site is closed to the public from January through March.
