How to Kill Johnson Grass with Scotts

Johnson grass is a resilient perennial weed that grows particularly well in the southern United States. Native to the Mediterranean region, Johnson grass grows to heights of 8 feet and features long, smooth leaves with a base up to 3/4 inch in diameter. Controlling Johnson grass involves the use of glyphosate herbicide such as Roundup from Scotts, owned by Monsanto. Properly mixed and applied, Roundup will help control Johnson grass and prevent invasive damage to plants and crops.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an active growing time to treat Johnson grass with Roundup Pro when the plant is no more than 18 inches in height. Also select a time when the plant is dry and the winds are calm to prevent overspray.

    • 2

Put on gloves and safety glasses for protection. Place a handheld or backpack sprayer on a sturdy surface such as a work bench. Remove the top from the sprayer.

    • 3

Pour Roundup Pro glyphosate into a measuring cup. Measure 2 2/3 ounces for every 1 gallon of water to be mixed. Pour the measured Roundup Pro into the spray tank.

    • 4

Slowly add 1/2 gallon of water to the Roundup Pro in the tank. Place the top on the sprayer and shake to mix the glyphosate and water together. Remove the top from the sprayer.

    • 5

Add more water slowly to the tank until the desired amount is reached. Place the top back on the spray tank and shake to thoroughly incorporate the glyphosate with the water.

    • 6

Spray the stalks and leaves of the Johnson grass with the Roundup Pro mixture. Thoroughly coat the plant but do not apply to the point where the glyphosate drips from the plant.

    • 7

Monitor the dieback of the Johnson grass over the next several days. Make another application of the mixture if necessary to achieve complete dieback.
