Measure the circumference of the tree trunk in inches about 4 1/2 feet from the ground with a flexible tape measure. Put on a pair of gloves before handling the insecticide.
Measure out 1/4 cup of granules per inch of trunk size. For a tree with two or more trunks, measure each one separately, add the measurements then multiply the total by 0.75 to get the total inches. Apply the granules evenly around the base of the tree, extending to 2 feet beyond the trunk. For trees with a trunk diameter larger than 30 inches, apply the granules to 3 or 4 feet beyond the trunk.
Water the granules thoroughly using a watering can or garden hose, so they soak into the soil.
