Active & Inactive Ingredients in Scotts Lawn Pro Weed & Feed

Scotts Lawn Pro 4-Step System is a line of products designed to provide the optimum amount of fertilizer and weed control for lawns throughout the year. Step 2 is the weed and feed product that should be applied in April, May or June. It is a combination of three types of fertilizers and two broadleaf weed killers. It also contains minute amounts of heavy metals.
  1. Health Food

    • Scotts Lawn Pro Step 2 contains ammoniacal and urea nitrogen, which are water-soluble forms of nitrogen. It also contains methyleneureas, which are forms of slow-release nitrogen. Turf grasses use large amounts of nitrogen for root and shoot growth. Soluble potash, another major nutrient in Scotts Lawn Pro Step 2, is a source of potassium, which also encourages root growth. Nitrogen and potassium increase the ability of turf grasses to tolerate cold, heat, drought, wear and diseases. Sulfur is a minor nutrient in Scotts Lawn Pro Step 2 that promotes root and shoot growth, and disease resistance. Nitrogen and sulfur enhance the green color of turf grasses.

    Defeat Weeds

    • Mecoprop-p and 2,4-D are the herbicides, or weed killers, in Scotts Lawn Pro Step 2. They kill numerous types of broadleaf weeds, but are not effective on grassy weeds. Both are safe for most cool and warm season grasses, although both cause moderate damage to centipedegrasses (Eremochloa ophiuroides). Mecoprop-p also causes moderate damage to St. Augustinegrasses (Stenotaphrum secundatum), and 2,4-D is not recommended at all for creeping bentgrasses (Agrostis stolonifera) or St. Augustinegrasses. Centipedegrasses grow in U.S. plant hardiness zones 7 and 8; St. Augustinegrassses grow in zones 8 through 10; and creeping bentgrasses grow in zones 3 through 9.

    Heavy Metals

    • Although large amounts of heavy metals can be toxic if they are absorbed through the skin or ingested, the amounts found in Scotts Lawn Pro Step 2 are considered safe when it is used according to the directions. It includes less than 2 parts per million of cobalt and lead, less than 3 ppm of arsenic and nickel, and less than 5 ppm of zinc.

    Use Safely

    • Wear long sleeves, long pants, socks and gloves when applying Scotts Lawn Pro Step 2. Keep people and pets out of the application area until the dust from the product has settled. Do not use the product near bodies of water, running water, drainage ditches, storm drains, sewers or gutters. Avoid over watering the application area to prevent run-off into water sources.
