How to Kill Pecan Weevils

The grub of the pecan weevil (Curculio caryae) feeds on the tree's developing kernals, and the adult weevil feeds on the tree's nuts, which causes them to prematurely fall from the tree. The adult weevils crawl from the ground and onto the tree in late August to September. They usually emerge in masses after a heavy rainstorm. Careful monitoring of the pest's life cycle will help determine the correct time to successfully kill the weevils.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a harvesting sheet on the ground beneath the pecan tree in mid-August. Jar the tree's branches using a large, padded pole. Shaking the branches will make the adult weevils fall to the ground. Begin control measures if more than three weevils fall from the tree's branches. Crush or dispose of the weevils before they crawl off.

    • 2

Shake the tree every day and dispose of the adult weevils as they hit the harvesting sheet. Continue to shake the tree daily and kill the weevils until no more fall from the tree. If more than one pecan tree is infested with weevils, consider using an insecticide to kill the pests.

    • 3

Spray the trees with an insecticide spray when the pecan's shells begin to harden. The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center recommend using Sevin or Imidan to control pecan weevils.

    • 4

Apply Sevin at a rate of 1 1/2 to 2.0 lbs. per acre and Imidan at a rate of 2 to 3 lbs. per acre. When treating a single pecan tree, follow the directions on the insecticide's label for application instructions. Treat the tree every 10 to 14 days for two to three applications.
