How to Kill Bugs in a Bedroom

Bugs are a burden to all home owners and apartment dwellers. Literally dozens of pest bugs could possibly be crawling around your bedroom, from cockroaches to silverfish to stink bugs. General uncleanliness attracts most bugs since they feed on organic matter like food you might leave lying around your room. Just keeping a clean bedroom may not be enough to keep the bugs away, however -- you may have to pull out several stops to eliminate them.

Instructions

  1. Extermination

    • 1

Spot-treat your bedroom for bugs you see out in the open, including silverfish or roaches on walls. Spot treatments usually consists of a spray with an insecticidal soap that kills insects on contact and is good for individual bugs.

    • 2

Lay out poison insect baits in the corners of your room. These baits often contain poisons that insects such as roaches bring back to their nests, where the poisons are then distributed. Change the poison bait traps regularly.

    • 3

Hang flypaper if your problem consists of flying insects, such as flies or gnats. Flypaper is a sticky tape that flying insects are attracted to. They will die after they land on it since they will not be able to extricate themselves. Flypaper is an unattractive but effective way to eliminate flying insects in small spaces like bedrooms.

    • 4

Wash your garments and bed sheets, pillowcases and comforters in hot water followed by a heated dry. Some insects may like to nest in your fabrics and can be killed with prolonged exposure to high heat.

    • 5

Vacuum your room and suck up any stray insects with the hose attachment. Vacuuming will not only suck up stray insects but will also remove any eggs that have been laid in your carpets. This method is particularly useful for getting rid of flea infestations. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag immediately or empty its container outside if it is a bag-less model.

    • 6

Set off a bug fogger. These devices spew a poisonous gas into the air and are required for many severe infestations, such as with bed bugs or fleas. Take caution and read instructions carefully before you use any type of bug fogger, as you will need to keep your bedroom sealed for several hours.

    General Prevention

    • 7

Keep your bedroom clean. This is the number-one step toward preventing bugs, which are attracted to leftover food, mold and other organic particles. Take your trash out regularly so it does not attract insects.

    • 8

Seal up entrance points in walls and corners with caulk. Bugs need a way inside your home, so if you go around and seal up any crevices, they will be locked out. This method is known as exclusion.

    • 9

Keep the bug screens on your windows closed tightly. It's always tempting to open a window during those warm summer months, but the only way to keep bugs out is to make sure your bug screens are always secure.
