How to Kill Moles in a Yard Without Harming Your Pets

Moles are common lawn pests that feed on grubs that live just under the turf. The moles dig tunnels through the soil, looking for grubs. These tunnels are unsightly and can be a tripping hazard, as well as a hazard for riding lawn mowers. Some methods of killing moles, such as harsh chemical poisons, may also harm a curious pet. The safest way to kill moles is with a trap that you bury in the run, out of harm's way.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your pets inside. Locate a mole run in the yard. Mole runs are rounded tunnels that usually run in a straight line. They are common alongside sidewalks or building foundations.

    • 2

Use a hand spade to cut through the sod on top of the run. Pull it back, revealing the tunnel under the sod. Remove a 6 to 12 inch area of sod.

    • 3

Activate the trap's spring mechanism, which varies by manufacturer. Lower the trap into the run, pressing down on the handle so the trap fits snugly into the tunnel.

    • 4

Replace the sod to cover the trap and firm it down so your pet can't easily dig it up. Insert a lawn flag into the spot so you can find the trap later.

Wait 24 hours. Keep your pets inside, if possible. If you have to let them out, keep them on a leash and away from the trap to prevent digging. After 24 hours, remove the sod again and pull the trap up. Open it and discard the dead moles in the trash.
