Removing Ice From a Driveway With Alcohol

Ice on your driveway is a slip hazard and can make it difficult to maneuver vehicles. Some homeowners use salt-based deicers to remove the ice, but these deicers are corrosive and can cause major damage to concrete or masonry driveways. An alcohol solution will melt the ice without damaging the driveway or the surrounding lawn or landscaping. You can use regular rubbing alcohol from the drug store.

Fill a 5-gallon bucket with one part warm water and two parts rubbing alcohol. Stir with a wooden spoon until the mixture is incorporated.

Shovel all the snow off the driveway. This will allow the alcohol to come into direct contact with the ice.

Pour the alcohol solution over the ice, starting at the top third of the driveway. Refill the bucket with the same mixture and pour the solution over the middle of the driveway.

    • 4

Refill the bucket with the same solution one more time and pour it over the bottom third of the driveway. Let the alcohol sit on the driveway until the ice begins to melt.

    • 5

Shovel the ice off the driveway as it breaks and melts. You can also use an icepick to speed up the breakup of the ice.
