How to Clean Moss Off Wood Decks

Exposure to moist, humid conditions makes wood decks ideal surfaces for moss growth. Overhanging vegetation often inhibits sunlight, making wooden surfaces susceptible to moss. Moss spores swiftly reproduce and proliferate across decks, causing the wooden planks to become slippery, dangerous and unsightly. Although moss benefits garden ecosystems, it doesn’t belong on decks. Promptly clean moss off your wood deck using methods that don’t harm the deck or the environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep loose moss off the deck’s wooden planks, using a stiff broom to detach as much moss as possible.

    • 2

Purchase a biodegradable concrete and patio cleaner containing seaweed extracts. Dilute approximately 1 cup of natural detergent solution with 1 gallon of water in a bucket according to the product manufacturer’s advised ratio. Thoroughly mix the solution with a stirring utensil.

    • 3

Pour the detergent solution into a garden sprayer and drench stubborn moss. Wait 24 hours for the remaining moss to die. Moss dries up and turns brown as it dies.

    • 4

Scrub the dead moss off the wood deck, using the broom.
