The Advantage of a Trickle System

A trickle irrigation system is also known as drip irrigation or micro-irrigation. This type of irrigation system is designed to provide plants with adequate amounts of water, while using less water than traditional sprinkler systems. When properly designed and installed, trickle irrigation systems save water and are easy to maintain.
  1. Identification

    • Trickle irrigation systems use tubing placed around the base of plants to provide water at low volumes. Tubing provides an even amount of water and is useful when plants are spaced close together. Bubblers and micro-spray sprinklers are usually placed around newly planted trees or shrubs with higher water requirements. These devices are low pressure and deliver water in a circular pattern. Microsprays and bubblers are usually installed along with trickle tubing for maximum effectiveness.

    Pros

    • Trickle irrigation uses less water than traditional sprinkler systems. This type of irrigation system places water closer to plant roots without watering unnecessary areas of the yard or garden. Fungal diseases are less common when trickle irrigation systems are used, because plants are over-watered less often. Trickle irrigation also keeps the foliage dry, which reduces fungal diseases as well. Most trickle irrigation systems are easy to install and maintain. By placing a trickle system on a controller, homeowners may pre-set watering times and frequency according to the needs of their garden.

    Cons

    • There are a few downsides to trickle irrigation systems. Trickle tubing can be a tripping hazard for elderly people, young children or pets. Tubing may be damaged during edging or mowing. Regular inspections of the system are necessary to avoid clogs and leaks. Using trickle systems may make it more difficult to tell if your plants are receiving adequate amounts of water.

    Considerations

    • Trickle irrigation systems are most efficient when they are well designed to suit the needs of your plants, flowers and shrubs. Home gardeners with oddly-shaped gardens or with very large gardens should rely on a professional irrigation installer for best results. Inspecting and cleaning tubing and emitters before watering in the spring, will help identify any problems with your system that need to be addressed. Routine inspections throughout the growing season will keep your trickle system working properly. Any watering system can waste water if watering frequency is excessive. Pre-setting a controller is the best way to control the frequency of watering in your yard or garden, no matter which type of system you choose.
