How to Kill Crabgrass Before Mulching With Wood Chips

Most homeowners routinely perform ordinary maintenance on lawns. Landscaping around the home is a great way to personalize and polish the look of a yard. Adding decorative wood chip mulch creates a natural-looking environment. Crabgrass and weeds can quickly destroy the look of a landscape. The average gardener can easily eradicate weeds by sheet mulching. Adding a top layer of decorative wood chips creates the final touch. The process can be accomplished quickly and inexpensively in an afternoon.

      Mow the area thoroughly to cut the crabgrass and weeds as low as possible. Rake the clippings from the area.

      Determine the size and shape of the area to be mulched. Measure the area and section it off with stakes and string. Hose the area so that it is wet, but not soaked.

      Lay cardboard sheets on the area. Overlap the sheets and do not leave any soil or weeds exposed. Cover the area completely. Place a .5-inch layer of newspaper on top of the cardboard.

      Add a layer of wood chips on top of the newspaper. Layer wood chips approximately 4-inches deep for maximum benefit. Remove the stakes and strings.
