A garden or walkway filled with weeds is a sight that makes almost every homeowner's stomach turn. Although commercially available weed prevention sprays and mixtures typically work well to solve this troublesome problem, harsh chemicals can be pose a health and safety risk. If you are looking for a natural way to stop weeds from taking over your outdoor space, salting is a well-known method that disrupts the normal water balance that plants need to survive.

      Pour one gallon of white vinegar into a large plastic bucket. Add one pound of salt to the vinegar. Table, rock or sea salts all contain the same compounds, so choose your salt based on your preference and the cost. Stir the vinegar and salt together with a long handled plastic or wooden spoon. Continuing stirring the mixture until you see the salt dissolve.

      Pour the mixture into a spray bottle.

      Shake the bottle to ensure that the salt and vinegar remain well mixed. Spray directly onto weeds and onto the ground.
