What Is Difference Between Roundup Products & Roundup Promax?

Since its introduction in the 1970s, Monsanto's Roundup has been a top-selling herbicide. Besides the original Roundup formula for weeds and grass, the company also has products specifically designed to kill poison ivy, wild blackberry and other invasive plants. Roundup Promax, geared for the lawn care professionals, contains a slightly different formula at a higher concentration. None of the products should be used to spot-treat weeds in lawns, since all kill grass.
  1. 30-Minute Rain-fast Guarantee

    • Unlike other Roundup products, Promax includes a 30-minute rain-fast guarantee with its use. If you spray an area with Promax and respraying to treat weeds is required because of rain falling within half an hour of the application, Monsanto guarantees it will replace the entire amount of Promax applied for free. According to Monsanto, the overall efficacy of Roundup Promax is superior to its other Roundup products.

    Formulations

    • Other Roundup products are available in differing formulations, such as foam, ready-to-use, concentrate and super-concentrate, depending on the particular type and use. Promax is available only in the concentrated version. The container sizes of other Roundup products also differ from the Promax. While other Roundup products are designed for at-home use, Promax is formulated for professional users, such as those managing golf courses, municipal and state departments of public works and similar larger-scale vegetation applications.

    Concentration

    • Roundup's Promax has a different formulation of potassium salt from that of other Roundup products. Due to its smaller molecule, Promax has greater concentration of active ingredients in each container. Each gallon of Promax contains the equivalent of 6 quarts of Roundup Pro. The smaller container means less packaging waste, as well as easier storage, transport and pouring. Roundup Promax has a thinner consistency than other Roundup herbicides, increasing pourability.

    Warning

    • Be careful when using weed and grass killers. There are dangers in using any herbicides, including the Roundup products, even though they are advertised as safe for people and pets soon after application. The National Institutes of Health lists possible symptoms of Roundup exposure in human beings, ranging from the mild to the extremely serious. These include abdominal cramps, difficult breathing, anxiety, headache, drowsiness, low blood pressure, tearing, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, mouth irritation and weakness, along with symptoms requiring urgent medical intervention such as coma and vomiting of blood.
