Homemade Weed Eater

Weeds are the bane of any gardener’s existence. The unwanted and unsightly plants typically grow fast and spread quick and can squeeze out the flowers and vegetables you intended to grow. While there a number of commercial products available to rid your garden and lawn of weeds, these can be expensive and excessive. If you are looking to save money or just avoid a trip to the home goods store, you can make your own weed removal solution from a variety of items most likely in your house already.
  1. Vinegar

    • Pour a liter of white vinegar into a large bowl. Add 4 ounces of lemon juice. Add a tablespoon of salt and a tablespoon of dish soap. Mix the solution together using a wooden spoon. Pour the mixture into a plastic spray bottle. Fill up the remainder of the plastic bottle with tap water. Spray the homemade weed killer solution directly on the unwanted weeds. Repeat the application every three to four days until the weeds die off. Do your best to avoid hitting any plants near the weeds, as the solution can be fatal to these plants as well.

    Bleach

    • Fill a plastic spray bottle with household bleach. Be careful when filling the bottle, the bleach can stain your clothes. Spray the weed directly with the bleach. Avoid direct contact with any plants you do not wish to kill, as the bleach is deadly to these as well. If accidental contact is made, simply rinse the plant off with water. The weeds will die in a few days as the bleach settles into the plant.

    Rubbing Alcohol

    • Pour a few drops of rubbing alcohol directly onto the leaves of the unwanted weeds. The rubbing alcohol will dry out the weeds, killing them in the process. As with the other solutions, avoid contact with other plants -- and rinse off if contact is made.

    Newspaper

    • Kill your weeds by putting your old newspapers to use. Gather a minimum of four sheets of newspaper and lay them over the weeds. The newspaper blocks the sun from reaching the weeds, preventing further growth and ultimately killing them. Leave the newspaper cover for at least a week -- you may have to replace the sheets of newspaper every couple days, depending on the weather. Use a few rocks to hold the paper in place.
