My LG Tromm Washer Has a Smelly Odor During Washing

Front-loading washers, such as the LG Tromm, are often chosen by homeowners who want to get their clothes clean in the most efficient manner possible. These washing machines use less water and get clothes cleaner than traditional washing machines. However, front-loading washing machines are prone to mold growth that can cause clothes to smell musty.
  1. Identification

    • The LG Tromm washing machine is a free-standing washer that utilizes SenseClean technology to get clothes extra clean. These machines have a variety of special features including Spin Sense, a stain cycle, auto balancing, quick cycle, extra rinse, reduced-noise operation and a forced drain system. While these machines clean clothes using less energy and detergent, they are prone to mold and mildew growth around the gasket seal around the door.

    Effects

    • Mold growth in front-loading washers can cause clothes to smell during the wash cycle and after drying. Clothes may also develop black, gray or green stains from mold growth. Mold must be removed from fabric, or it may leave a permanent stain and odor. Homeowners who are exposed to mold day-after-day, may experience adverse health effects. Some of the most common symptoms associated with mold exposure include skin rash, itching eyes, nasal congestion and sneezing. Those allergic to mold may have serious symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath and an increase in asthma symptoms. Immune-compromised people may develop fungal infections in their lungs from mold, as well.

    Solution

    • Front-loading washing machine manufacturers recommend homeowners wash their clothes in warm or hot water instead of cold water to reduce fungal spores that cause mold to grow. At the end of every washing day, wipe the door of the machine around the gasket and on the glass with a soft cloth. Clean all detergent dispensers each month to remove mold spores. Use only HE detergents in your front-loading washing machine to reduce suds and soap residue. Leave the door on your front-loading machine open every night after washing to allow the machine to dry. This can be a hazard for small children and pets, so limit their access to the laundry room while the door is open.

    Considerations

    • Cleaning your front-loading machine each week will help reduce odors and mold growth. Reducing the humidity in your laundry room will also help reduce mold and mildew growth. Be sure your clothes dryer is vented to the outside to keep indoor humidity levels low. Run a dehumidifier in your laundry room if humidity levels do not fall in the range of 30- to 50-percent relative humidity, which is recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency.
