How to Kill Broadleaf and Grass Fast

Killing all grass and vegetation is the first step in replanting a lawn or planting a vegetable garden in the spring. Although there are many natural ways to kill vegetation, they all require time. The fastest way to kill undesirable grass and broadleaf plants, such as dandelions and plantains, is by using a chemical herbicide. Plan to apply herbicide far in advance if you are replanting the area, so the chemicals will seep out of the soil.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a garden sprayer with a nonselective herbicide labeled for use on broadleaf weeds. These herbicides often contain glyphosate as one of the active ingredients. Use the amount specified in the instructions for the square footage of the area you are treating.

    • 2

Pour water into the sprayer, per the herbicide instructions, to dilute the mixture.

    • 3

Put on work gloves and safety glasses to protect your skin and eyes from any chemical back spray.

    • 4

Walk over the ground, spraying the herbicide in a side-to-side pattern, saturating all grass and weed leaves thoroughly. Concentrate on the foliage and stems, not on the dirt and soil.

    • 5

Wait five to seven days, then apply a second treatment to the area if any plants remain alive. Depending on the amount of grass and weeds, a third application may be required five to seven days after the second treatment.
