How to Get Rid of Harmonia Axyridis

Harmonia axyridis is the scientific name for harlequin lady beetle, also known as the Japanese lady beetle and Asian lady bug. Harmonia axyridis was introduced to North America from Asia to help control aphids and other insect pests. The populations of Harmonia axyridis quickly naturalized and have spread throughout North America. The insects are generally seen as beneficial insects since they help control garden pests, but they can become a nuisance in the fall when large numbers of Harmonia axyridis make their way into homes to hibernate. These insects are easy to get rid of with basic cleaning equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a nylon stocking inside the hose extension of a vaccum cleaner. Orient the stocking so that the closed foot-portion of the stocking in inside the hose extension Harmonia axyridis beetles emit a foul-smelling liquid when threatened that can stain surfaces in your home. The nylon traps the beetles and prevents the foul smell accumulating in the vacuum bag.

    • 2

Fold the open end of the stocking around the outside lip of the vacuum cleaner hose extension and place a rubber band over the stocking to hold it in place. Double wrap the rubber band, if needed, to ensure that it firmly holds the stocking in place

    • 3

Search for Harmonia axyridis beetles in your home. The beetles prefer warm areas. Look along window sills, door frames and cracks or other openings on south-facing walls. The insects frequently accumulate on surfaces with contrasting colors such as black shutters on a white wall.

    • 4

Turn on the vacuum cleaner with the nylon trap and vacuum up all of the harmonia axyridis beetles you can find.

Remove the nylon stocking while the vacuum cleaner is still on and twist the stocking to trap the beetles. Dispose of the beetles outdoors or place them in a plastic bucket with small air holes if you want to release the bugs in your garden later on.
