How to Control the Growth of Yucca

Yucca plants are highly invasive plants that can populate an area so heavily that other plants no longer have room to grow. To control yucca growth, herbicidal means are considered to be the most effective solution. Yucca plants bloom during spring and summer, and these are the best months to apply herbicides to control their spread.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the yucca plants to dry if they are wet. The water interferes with the herbicide and oil mixture reaching the plant's roots. Optimum times to spray are the two-week periods before and after the yucca blooms.

    • 2

Add premixed herbicide and vegetable oil to a sprayer. Experts at the Texas A&M AgriLIFE Extension recommend using a premixed herbicide and oil solution called "Remedy RTU" as a way to simplify the process.

    • 3

Spray the herbicide and oil solution directly into the whorl at the center of the plant. The whorl is where the leaves overlap and spread from the root system. Follow by spraying the rest of the plant with the herbicide and oil mixture.

Mark each plant that you have sprayed with herbicide by spraying it with a brightly-colored spray paint. You do not have to spray the entire plant. A small mark on a few leaves is enough to mark the affected yucca plants. Choose a color that does not normally appear in nature, such as neon orange or yellow.
