How to Rid Moss From Dirt & Rocks

Moss may add to the beauty of the forest, but when it invades your own lawn and garden, it can take over, killing your grass and plants. Moss is a tiny, green plant that grows in clumps and attaches itself to trees, grass, dirt or soil, and rocks. It grows in conditions that are very moist and shady. As annoying as moss is, there are simple ways to rid your soil and any rocks you may have in your garden of this invasive intruder.

  • Rake
  • Garden lime
  • High-pressure hose

  1. Moss on Soil

      Treat the soil with a moss killer spray, available at any gardening store.

      Rake the moss out of the dirt vigorously with a hard rake, being sure to get out all the roots of the moss.

      Apply garden lime to your soil, which raises its pH levels, making it hard for moss to grow on.

    Moss on Rocks

      Use a high-pressure hose to blast the moss off the rocks with water.

      Scrape off any remaining moss with a sharp garden hoe or knife

      Scrub the rock with a strong bristle brush to remove moss from crevices in the rocks.
