How to Kill Aphids With Orange Oil

Aphids are tiny insects that feed on the sap of living plants. They are often found on the underside of leaves, usually in large groups. Aphids do not normally kill established plants, but they can carry plant diseases and in some cases will kill plants that are sensitive to aphid saliva. There are many ways to destroy them, but some of these ways are toxic to humans and animals. Orange oil is an organic method of aphid control that is generally considered to be safe.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the peels of two oranges in 1 gallon of water. Leave the peels in for two weeks. To make sure the oil is organic, start with organic oranges, though this is optional. Stir the solution periodically to help release the oil. Use the spoon to flatten the peels against the side of the container when you stir.

    • 2

Mince one clove of garlic and one medium onion. Be sure to use organic garlic and onion if you want to keep the final solution organic. Soak in 1 quart of warm water for an hour, then add 1 teaspoon of organic cayenne pepper powder and stir well to create a garlic and pepper tea base for the insecticide. This helps to strengthen the effectiveness of the orange oil and will kill the aphids more quickly than orange oil alone.

    • 3

Mix 2 ounces of orange oil with 1 gallon of water and 1 quart of garlic and pepper tea. Strain out the solids and pour the mixture into a spray bottle.

Spray directly onto the aphids to kill them. This will only kill insects that it touches, so repeat spraying will be necessary whenever you see the pests on your plants.
