Typical Basement Sump Pump Drainage Layout

Sump pumps are designed to remove excess moisture from your basement sump before it can cause problems such as water damage and mold growth. These pumps are especially important in areas where flooding is common during the rainy season. Inspecting your sump pump routinely will help you identify problems before water can back up into your basement and cause damage.
  1. Types

    • There are main two types of sump pumps used in residential homes. Submersible pumps must be placed in the bottom of the sump, submerged in water. This type of sump pump has a built-in pressure switch that activates the pump when necessary.
      Pedestal pumps are upright-style pumps with motors on the top. The pump at the base of the pedestal is activated by a float. A pedestal pump's motor should not get wet.

    Placement

    • The sump is typically placed beneath the basement and is connected to drain tile at the footing of the house. Once water drains into the basement sump, it activates the pump. The water is then discharged through a drain hose that directs it at least 20 feet from the foundation of your home.

    Installation

    • Sump holes are typically 2 feet in diameter to allow enough space for the pump and piping. A sump liner should be installed over 4 inches of coarse gravel, which helps keep the pump from becoming clogged with debris or mud. Place the pump inside the liner. A cover should be placed over the pump.

    Considerations

    • Avoid directing discharged water toward your neighbor's home or onto a septic drain field. If you have a septic system, never allow discharged water from the sump pump to be pumped into the basement floor drain, as this can damage your septic system.
