Treatment of Aphids on Okra

Okra is rich in many valuable nutrients including soluble fiber, vitamin B-6 and folic acid. It is an excellent plant to grow in the home vegetable garden and needs little care to thrive if it is grown in rich, healthy soil. Okra, though, can sometimes be plagued with pests, such as aphids. Examine under the leaves of your okra plants every three to four days to check for aphids. If you notice aphids feeding on your okra, control measures are necessary before they damage your crop.

Instructions

Wash off the aphids with the strong spray from your hose every two to three days to minimize their damage until harvest time. They are typically located on the undersides of the leaves. The translucent, soft-bodied insects will fall to the ground where they won't recover. Do this in the morning so the leaves have time to dry before nightfall.

    • 2

Increase the population of lady bugs, which can be purchased online and in some nursery and garden centers. Ladybugs eat aphids and can help control their population.

    • 3

Treat the okra with an insecticide that is safe for okra plants and effective in controlling aphids. Imidacloprid, azadirachtin, flonicamid and malathion are examples of insecticides that can be used to treat aphids. Read the label and apply per manufacturer directions for safe and effective use.
