According to the United States Department of Energy, foam board insulation is often used to insulate almost any area of your home, including the roof and foundation. Foam boards are a good choice because these products reduce the amount of heat coming through wood or steel, keeping your home comfortable and efficient. Most foam board insulation is made from polyurethane, polystyrene or polyiso. Blanket insulation is one of the best-known and widely used types of insulation. This type of insulation comes in batts and rolls and is often used in attics, with ceilings and with floors. Blanket insulation is made from natural fibers, fiberglass or other types of flexible fibers. One benefit of using blanket insulation is it can be cut to fit the area you are insulating.
Pitched roofs and cathedral ceilings must have adequate space between the roof deck and ceiling for insulation. The United States Department of Energy states that this space can be achieved by using large rafters, truss joints or scissor truss framing. If adequate space is not present, you can add insulation by placing it on the underside of rafters using high-density batts, such as R-30 batts. Foam board insulation may also be placed under the rafters, but must be covered with a fire-rated material to comply with building and fire codes.
Insulating the floor over your unheated garage is another way to get adequate amounts of insulation in your garage. This works well in multi-level homes that have adequate amounts of insulation in place in all other areas of the home. When installing insulation to this area, seal all air leakage areas and install a barrier to keep cold air in your garage from penetrating the floor above your garage. Always trim your insulation so that it fits into the spaces of your floor or roof with no gaps in coverage.
While insulation is an important part of energy efficiency, there are a few things that can increase the effectiveness of your insulation. Be sure moisture is not a problem in your roof or anywhere else where you have insulation. Wet insulation is not effective and often develops mold growth, which can be hazardous to you and your family. Check around your roof and ceilings for gaps where air could be leaking in or out of your home. Be sure you have adequate ventilation in your home where insulation is installed.
