What Herbs & Plants Repel Red Spider Mites?

Spider mites are tiny pests that can infest plants both indoors and out. They are very small, almost invisible to the naked eye, but they can cause a tremendous amount of damage once they take hold of a plant. They make little webs between the leaves that look like spider webs, which is what gives them their name, and suck the sap from the leaves. Although they infest many kinds of plants, there are a few plants they avoid. These will usually not only repel spider mites from themselves, but they will keep the pests away from nearby plants as well.
  1. Garlic

    • Garlic is relatively easy to grow in the garden, and most plants do well when planted close to it. Spider mites will not usually come near garlic, so it should be planted alongside any susceptible plants to help to protect them. It is especially useful when planted near tomatoes, basil and sweet peppers. Not all types of garlic will grow in all climates, but there are many varieties available that have been adapted for less than optimal conditions. It is important to select a variety of garlic suited to the local soil and climate to be successful with this plant.

    Chrysanthemum

    • Certain varieties of the chrysanthemum flower can be grown for their natural pest-controlling abilities. This group is referred to as pyrethrums, but the flowers that produce this chemical are all members of the chrysanthemum family. These flowers will effectively repel red spider mites and many other pests, but they should be handled with care as they can be somewhat toxic if misused. Generally, though, they are harmless and make a good border for gardens.

    Dill

    • Dill is an herb that has a very strong, pungent odor. It is commonly used in the making of dill pickles and other pickled foods. It grows to as much as 3 feet high, and is a natural repellent for red spider mites. It works well when used to create a border around a small section of the garden, since the repellent effects will protect plants located in the same general area. It should be planted in soil that is rich in organic material and well drained. Dill needs about six to eight hours each day of full sun.

    Coriander

    • Coriander is an herb with a strong flavor and smell. It will successfully repel red spider mites, not only from itself but also from neighboring plants. It grows upright and is normally anywhere from about 1 to 3 feet in height. Coriander is best planted near vegetables, where it can benefit the garden in multiple ways. Not only does it repel mites, but it also attracts bees, which are helpful in pollinating the plants. Both the fruit and the leaves of this plant are commonly used as both seasoning and in folk medicine.
