How to Get Rough Spots Off of a Final Layer of Urethane

If you refinished a piece of wood furniture or floor, you likely protected it with several coats polyurethane or urethane. These two terms are used interchangeably by the average do-it-yourselfer. No matter what you call it, your final coat or layer might have some rough spots, which are often caused from dust that settles as it dries. You can easily remove these rough spots with steel wool without having to apply another coat of urethane.

Instructions

    • 1

Rub steel wool gently in the direction of the grain until the rough spots are removed. Select a super fine steel wool labeled as #0000.

    • 2

Repeat with the next grade steel wool, #000, if the rough spots were not removed with the finer steel wool in Step 1.

    • 3

Apply a little bit of petroleum-based or beeswax paste wax to restore or even out the sheen. Rub it on the surface in the direction of the grain using a cotton rag.

    • 4

Buff the surface with a dry, clean, cotton rag to reach the desired sheen.
