How to Use Tin to Protect Trees From Squirrels

Squirrels are helpful when you have maple or other nut-producing trees that litter your yard. But if you're losing fruit you'd like to harvest from your trees to pesky squirrels it can be disappointing. While there are many different control methods for squirrels, you can use tin to protect your trees. You don't have to be a construction professional to make your own tree protectors. With the use of a few supplies from the hardware store, you can keep squirrels from climbing your trees.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of the tree trunk at a height of 6 to 8 feet off the ground. Add 8 to 12 inches to the total length to accommodate for growth of the tree trunk.

    • 2

Purchase a precut, 2-foot-wide piece of tin sheeting at the hardware store, or cut your own with metal cutters.

    • 3

Wrap the 2-foot-wide tin band around the tree trunk about 6 to 8 feet above ground level.

    • 4
Stretchy bungee cords expand with the tree trunk.

Secure the tin band in place with bungee cords. Hook one or more bungee cords together to fit snugly around the tree and hold the tin in place. As the tree trunk grows, the bungee cords will stretch along with it.

Add another repellent to low-hanging tree branches by tying pieces of aluminum foil to the branches with twine. Tie one end of the twine around a 2-inch by 4-inch piece of aluminum foil. Tie the other end of the twine to the tree branch. The foil will scare squirrels away with movement, noise and light.
