Rake up fallen red apples with a garden rake. Dispose of the apples in a sealed trash bag.
Wrap chicken wire mesh around the trunk of the apple tree to a height of at least three feet. Clip the chicken wire with wire cutters. Twist the clipped ends together to secure the chicken wire around the tree trunk to protect the bark from being eaten by rabbits.
Create a homemade hot-pepper spray to use as a taste and scent repellant against rabbits. Puree three fresh cayenne peppers and 1 or 2 tablespoons of water in a food processor.
Hold cheesecloth over a glass jar and pour the pureed cayenne peppers and liquid into the cheesecloth. Allow the liquid to separate from the peppers and drain into the glass jar. Discard the remaining peppers.
Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 drops of dish-washing detergent to the glass jar. Stir the ingredients well with a spoon.
Combine 1 ounce of the cayenne pepper mix with 10 ounces of water in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients.
Spray the hot-pepper spray on the tree trunk and branches of the apple tree. Apply it to the grass area surrounding the tree also. Reapply the hot-pepper spray after rainfall or after you water the tree.
Alternate use of the hot-pepper spray with predator urine purchased at a lawn and garden store. Use the predator urine in the same manner as the hot-pepper spray. Change the repellent tactics every three to four weeks to prevent rabbits from growing used to the tactics you employ.
